ESSAY N. 4

In this essay i will be explaining the summary, also the author’s point of view, the values that I found and also the anti values.
So this is a story written by Elizabeth Gaskell that is called Christmas storms and sunshine. So this story starts with a confrontation between two important families that are the Jenkins and the Hodgsons. Mr. Jenkins and Mr. Hodgson are the two compositors of the main English newspaper in the town, Mr hodgson was the creator of the Examiner and Mr. Jenkins was the creator of the flying post so that’s why they are always fighting because they want to have the best newspaper. The problem is not only with the men it involves the women too because they dislike each other and often fight too. These two families are always like trying to have the same things and also they live in the same building so plus all their problems they have to see each other every day in other words they try to be equal because that’s how they can like have the competition.
Mrs. Jenkins never had a son but she actually has a cat so this pet is like her son and Mary Hodgson never had a pet or an animal but she already has a son. One day both families were in a meeting so Mr. Jenkins’s cat eat Mr. Hodgson’s dinner so at the time he saw what the cat did he got really mad and started another fight against Mr. Jenkins. Later Mary Hodgson’s baby got really sick that Mrs. Hodgson didn’t know what to do so her first thought was going to Mrs. Jenkins apartment. When they opened the door Mr. Jenkins refused to help Mary because all the problems that they used to have so he left from there. Mrs. Jenkins seeing what was happening and how sick was the baby she decided to help.
Now talking about the author’s point of view, Elizabeth was a omniscient narrator and also in this story she talks in third person. During her life she passed through a horrible time that was her baby’s death so I think that this is related with the story because maybe the mood of what was happening with Mary seeing her baby very sick was the same mood she felt when the doctors couldn’t do anything else with her baby.  Also in the story appears some values that are very important like compassion when Mrs. Jenkins accepted to help Mary Hodgson’s baby this is an act of compassion also the love is found here in the story, that is the love of a mother seeing his baby sick. Some anti values that appear here are envy and it is basically presented in every time because all the story is about the conflict between the two families and their plans to have the same things for the competition.
In my personal point of view I really like the story, at first i didn’t understand anything because it was too hard but later it become easier, I like how it ended because they could leave aside all the problems and fights that they used to have so they forgot the competition about who’s gonna win as the best English newspaper of the town and by the disease of the baby Hodgson it appears a good friendship so i understand as a reflection that maybe we always see in others only the bad things but not the good things and all what they can aport to our lives so we have to just be good with everyone and stop judging the others
